* Here is the Deal with Scramble.

I am finishing a residency this July. I got in Post Match. But i tried hard as hell in scramble and nothing worked out. I learnt a few things and will give u my pearls of wisdom.

1. Scramble and post match is NOT for people who need visa. I know of only 1 person who got a visa in post match.

2. Largely it is for american medical grads, and less for IMGs.

3. Positions do keep opening up even till June. I got interviewed on 13th June.

4. Dont count on post match. Keep working on improving ur resume. Do research. Observerships help too. To get these positions u need contacts. Friends and spouses are best recommendations.

5. I do not understand how people with such high scores do not match. My guess is the high scores make u too ambitious and u interview at the wrong places. Keep ur goals reasonable. Always have a second string residency program interviews for back-up.

6. Ask me questions .

I got the post match offer.

As like everyone I tried in scramble but nothing worked for me. My first fax went three hours late. But after two days I got my first call. I didnt like that program. So I didnt attend the interview.
Later, I mailed virtually all IM programs where i am interested. I got lots of replies, all are fully matched. But suddenly I got a call from program saying that there might be an opening. I attended the interview. Unfortunately I didnt get the position. I was quiet depressed... But suddenly after two days, I got a similar mail from different program which i took. Its a pretty good program.

So dont give up. The positions do open up. So keep on trying. And try to improve CV, by doing clerkship or research.
Actually, I got an interview call when i applied for clinical clerkship. The PD said "they are expecting a position and they offered me an interview" So keep trying

Good Luck

I've asked four different PDs why some people with very high scores remain unmatched and they all answered along the lines of " I prefer a well rounded candidate with average scores, someone with a certain degree of common sense and a good team player attitude" another one told me that she had bad experience with the 99ers such as inability to apply knowlegde, personality conflicts and a sense of entitlement, and that the average scores mid 80's were the scores that made for the best residents, another told me that many of the 99ers lacked clinical dexterity and some had problems with following instructions and taking initiative, they all complained about a degree of "psychorigidity making many 99ers untrainable".
This was a huge suprise to me, they also told me that poor interviewing skills was very common amoung this group.
Food for thought. Hmmm.

Stay busy and don't let up continue calling programs visiting programs on Wed. for Grand Rounds, journal clubs on Thursdays, pharmaceutical sponsored professional association dinners, conferences, charity and volunteer work, etc...Meet people, network and above all be yourself, a fake can be spotted 100 miles away, be relaxed but respectful, just make sure you surround yourself by doctors and take up other interest, i.e. toasmaster club, rotary club, kiwanees, sporting events, do yoga and/or taichi, qigong, etc... In short live your life to the fullest and obey GOD's rules and do on to others as you would want them to do you.
Good Luck and GOD BLESS and remember...
...NEVER SURRENDER and BE INTENSE IN YOUR PREP!!!
