This is the subspecialty that needs a strong connection. either you have a famous boss or senior ophthalmology faculty in eye field as your referee, or you have done rotation in ophthalmology in US + a US ophthalmologist recommendation (junior faculty is fine in this case). Otherwise forget about it. |

Do not let people discourage you. I matched to derm so it is doable!!
Just do research with known faculty and do your best, try to present/publish in top journals and det good LORs. It will count a lot. And most importantly, be determined and do not let anybody disrupt you like jakekdk. |

Hey,
I have matched in ophthalmology... Its been a tough couple of years, but finally made it. Have done a little more than 1 year of research, 9 months at UCSF and 8 months with the Chairman at Bascom Palmer... Have 8 publications so far as 1st author... few more to come soon... I am 25 now and have not even done ophthal back home in mumbai... I think the field requires persistence and commitment... hard work and some luck.. What else do u want to know about?
Hope u make the right decisions... |

opunjabi, congratulations......I don't quite grasp one thing; a little more than one year of research and you have 8 publications as a first author? That means you published one paper every 1month and a half!!!!! And you mentioned in good journals too.....tell us the secret please, I see PhD postdocs that strugle for one year to publish a JI paper (forget about nature and science, you need at least a couple of years for them....)
best, |

Thanks phenobarb... Well, one of the publications was from my med school, and the remaining ones are from USA... I worked on many projects at a time, and the good thing was that I started research after completing steps, so had full time. Actually didnt match in 2005, so I worked very hard for the next 2 months and wrote 4 papers then- 1 review and 3 full manuscripts based on my projects.. Basically worked afterhours. But I think once u start writing a paper, it can be quite a lot of fun, and it feels pretty good when papers are accepted.. Ur PhD friend must be doing basic science research, which needs lots of time to complete. Clinical projects can get over much quicker. In Miami I have already worked on 4 case studies, which dont take more than a week to write, each... Hope that gives you a heads up! |
