What are my chances of getting a ophthalmology residency. Is it realistic? would it be worth putting in the time for research, or a prelim year?
Im an IMG, have a USA citizenship, did ok on the step 1 and well on step 2.
If anyone could help me out ..that would be great. |

Matchmaker,
I read through the link, Thanks a lot.
Could you tell me what this means please?
The program supplements the PGY-1 matching services of the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). It is timed to allow applicants to know their PGY-2 placement in Ophthalmology before they submit their rank list for PGY-1 choices.
And I looked through FRIEDA and there about 117 programs for ophthalmology, are the same programs in the SF Match?

And what subject would one do a PGY-1 in?

Please read my previous post. The SF Match matches you for Ophtho a year in advance. Lets say you are applying this year (2007). You will apply to the NRMP for your prelim year which, if successfully matched, will start in July 2008. The SF match will match you for Ophtho which will start in July 2009. The Match day for Ophtho is usu in the 3rd week of January, before the NRMP Match day in March. So the candidate will know where he/she matched for Ophtho before the rank list is finalized for the Prelim year.
The 117 programs in Freida are the same ones in the SF Match directory.
PGY-1 year can be a Prelim year in Internal Medicine, Surgery or a Transitional year. Thats your choice. |

Matchmaker,
What would be the best way for one to find research positions for ophthalmology? Are there any universities that are better. Would it be better to go online, or go to individual hospitals and ask them? What defines a good research program?
Thanks |

You will have to write folks with your resume. Or apply for research positions that come out in the job market. I found the former more useful, but what works for you will work for you! I would think that a good research setting is one where there are lots of active investigators and one that publishes a lot. Usually the top eye hospitals do that and you can find lists online.
To mle2ck - thats right! |

Matchmaker,
Do you think they would offer a research position to someone with my credentials? Are most research positions paid? and this is more of a practical question if they are not how do people survive for 1-2 years? How many years of research did you have to put in before you matched?
Are you in ophthal?
Thanks |
