I am changing from H1b residency program to a J1 program starting july this year.I am in US now, and I am filing for change of status from H1B to J1,pending change of status, can I start my residency or do I have to get J1 visa stamped in my passport before I can start my residency?

why do you want to get your self into trouble by accepting J1?

But any how I WISH YOU GOOD LUCK.

I hope and wish the program is good and you'll have no troubles completing 3 yrs of residency, and get a waiver later.

J-1 is no trouble as it is made out to be.....in fact J-1 has many benefits..for some reason it has become like a urban legend that J-1 is to be avoided at all costs....

in J-1 spouse gets EAD to work for a year the EAD has to be renewed every year though

J-1 jobs are not too difficult to find..till date all the people i know have had multiple offers in oK areas....

You don't need a J1 visa stamp in your passport. Visa stamp is only useful when you are entering the U.S. COS is enough. I guess once you get the receipt of COS, you are free to go.
