A 7-year-old boy is brought to the emergency department because of facial edema and respiratory distress since eating dinner 2 hours ago. He has had coryza and cough during the past 2 days. His temperature is 37.5°C (99.5°F), pulse is 100/min, respirations are 40/min, and blood pressure is 100/70 mm Hg. Breath sounds are unequal with decreased aeration and a prolonged expiratory phase.
