A 70-kg (154-lb) man on a fixed NaCl intake
(200 mmol/day) is given daily injections of a
potent mineralocorticoid hormone for 4 days. He
...has free access to water and consumes his usual
caloric intake. Excretion of NaCl is as follows:
Day NaCl (mmol)
1 30
2 90
3 180
4 200
Assuming that 1 L of 0.9% saline contains 150
mmol of NaCl and weighs 1 kg, how much will
this patient weigh (in kg) at the end of day 4?
(A) 66
(B) 68
(C) 70
(D) 72
(E) 74 |

I think:
he has (30 + 90 + 180 + 200) = 500mmol NaCl output, and 4 * 200mmol input, so by the end of the 4th day, he has 300mmol extra NaCl in his body. Now in order to keep his body fluid isosmolar (since 150mmol NaCl in 1 L water is isosmolar) he has to add (300 / 150) = 2 L water to his body. So I think the guy should weigh 72, choice D. |

@ csfirst :Thanks for the reply. The answer is correct. somehow i never thought in this direction. and i understood the question pattern.
@ adrenaline4u :
Is it this question ?? sorry i could not put up with answer choices.
If it is this question the answer choice will be choice A. (see explanation down)
A 25-year-old woman comes to the physician because of a 10-year history of frequent occurrences of fever blisters.
Physical examination shows perioral vesicles. Microscopic examination of culture of scrapings from three vesicles
shows herpes simplex virus 1. Which of the following patterns in the figure shown was most likely observed when
the viral DNA from the cultures was examined by restriction enzyme analysis on polyacrylamide gels?
Here what they have asked is three samples from different sites showed SAME herpes type 1 strain . SO what they mean is it must have UNIFORM characteristic DNA pattern on gel electrophoresis. and the uniform pattern is seen only on choice A for all three samples. so it is option A. What they should have mentioned in options is no.1 , 2 , 3 are test numbers. bcoz it confuses you with numbers. |
