  A 22 year old female college student of Greek Descent is evaluated b/c she tires very easily and has had palpitations when playing tennis for the past 3 months. She reports no night sweats or wt loss, and her Fhx is negative. She has 2 siblings. PE is unremarkable. CBC shows a Hbg of 9 and Hct of 28%. And an erthrocyte count of 3.7 million. Erythrocyte distribution width is elevated at 17%
(normal range is 10.5-14.5%). The Europhile, lymphocyte and PLT count are NML.

Which of the following is the most appropriate intial step in the management of this patient?
