I would rather buy a car than leasing unless you are the type of person who wants to change cars, then leasing is for you.Leasing is like you are renting, if you buy, you can sell it afterwards. For that, at least you can get some money back after.

But I have heard you can't buy a car unless you have credit history. Unless you have 10 grand + to buy a used car

can you do without a car? places like new york and chicago you dont need a car if you are smart about where you live.

a car really is a pretty big expense whether leasing or buying.

but for residency i would recommend getting an older honda civic or toyota corolla for $7-8k. they are very reliable and you can upgrade once u get attending salary.

You can buy a car with the job offer that you will get after the residency acceptance. If you don't have credit history, your loan might get rejected or your loan would have higher interest rate and higher down payment. If you happened to have cosigner "some one close to you with good credit history who agrees to sign the contract with you, then you can get good loan, however your cosigner will be responsible to pay the entire loan in case if you happened to be irresponsible about your payments, therefore, cosigners are usually not feasible between friends and coworkers.

Best option, pay the entire price at one and buy the car
Or, lease for the first two years, build a credit history then buy afterward. You can lease a car with the job offer with no troubles.

Honda Accord is the best car during residency. You can have a luxury car after getting done with residency. Accord will go long way.
