Resident salary - dalnie
#11
Hi, dr dalnie, I have a lot respect for you, others here need the residency training, for you, you are already a fully trained pathologist, you are just going through this 'routine' so you can take the board exam. You will be working with fresh young graduate who need guidance versus you can fully independently do your own work, and for 4 years + fellowship - because everyone is doing fellowship in Pathology to be more marketable for the tight job market. I don't think a lot people here realize the depth of courage and determination you have. But I do. just want to say that. My best wishes to you.

As soon as I came to this country which was 8 yrs back I joined a hospital lab as a technologist. I was able to get that because of my pathology background. In a years time I was eligible to take the ASCP exam which I took as a specialist in Microbiology. Now in 7 years I made my way up to the level of supervisor. I work with the pathologist all the time and they give me due respect. sometimes I do the grossing of the specimens when our PA is on vacation. Even now they expect me to come back as pathologist and during vacation come and do the grossing for them. They will pay me 800 /day for grossing if I want to do as part time/vacation time.

I will be going to NC which is definitely cheaper than PA. You can calculate 50000 divided by 26 (no. of paychecks in a yr). And deduct the taxes and the insurance which is around 1100 per pay check for me. ( this is the worst case scenario)

@dalnie......your calculation is absolutely wrong. 1100 per pay check is like 58% tax. there's no place in this country where you pay more than 33% tax.

federal tax bracket for residency is 25%.

Hi All,

apart from the salary during residency, the programs provide meal coupons to residents and other allowances like funding for books and electronics etc..

pgy 1 salary changes from state to state....NY has the highest salary of an ave for 55K to 57K for PGY1 year.. and its less in midwest...

I guess by NY, you're all meaning NYC? because PGY1 salary where I matched starts below 50K. PGY2 and 3 are above though.
