One method of getting drugs past the blood brain barrier is to inject a solution with a high osmolarity first and then follow with the drug injection. Why does this work?

THE HYPEROSMOLAR SOLN PROBABLY forces out water from behind the BBB, and partially disrupts it/makes it more permeable, during which time, any other substances will have a free-er access to the inside...
