Dear friends thank u all
Dear dr_mommy
I have come to USA last year and before deciding to study for USMLE talked to so many physicians and nobody told me that there is no place. I have met old grads with 20 years after graduation who have already had taken their residency posts. Certaily our choices for residency are limited to certain programs cuz some programs prefer young fresh students.
So. go for your gaol as drock says. 10 years of experience is an optimum period and I am sure many programs will appreciate taht. AND we have not been far from medicine, we were actively practicing.
Getting a residency depends on 1- ur score 2- ur background( esp. research) 3- ur recommendations as I was told.
Dear drock absolutely so!
Dear hannnibal
starting UW depends on ur whole paln and time. I started with Kaplan texts to get a perspective of recent topics in each field and then did UW for 4 months. If u r already familiar with new topics in medicine, start with uW. I think we need working with UW 3-6 months to get the most of it because, for those who r fresh from their school, it might suffices to study UW for 1 months.
Dear usmler2009
Absolutely! perseverance in short term to take the test and in the long term to pursue our goals.
as to the time management, I can refer you to what our friends have shared in this forum before, read their experiences. 1- make sure you can stay awake and alert for 8 hours, get enough rest in the last week. don't make urself confused and tired with new materials in kast week, review only ur high yield notes or topics.
2-practice concentration on tests in the last week with doing time mode UW Qs 1-2 blocks per day.
3- on the exam day, keep focused and calm. many distarctions will face you both in the exam centers and tests. keep calm.
4-DON'T WASTE UR TIME ON ANY ANY Q U FIND DIFFICULT. I had few simple Qs that I had forgot their answers and trying to rememeber them I nearly lost my time and had to rush on other Qs.
5- learn how to read long Qs from the first line to last line / or from the last line to firs line / or by skipping many details in the first glance , this is a skill we should practice, otherwise lenghty Qs will take all our time.
6- Over all i was short of time only in one block and lost 2 Qs. that was because spending more time on some simple Qs( my mind seemed blocked then!) and then realizing that I am becoming sleepy and trid to help myself by closing my eyes to get rest for 1 min( which lasts more!)
