C3 complement deficiency:

Bacterial infections ( especially encapsulated bacteria )
Increased type III hypersensitivity rxns

C3 deff. increases 3 rxns

Asplenic patients:

1. spleen is a major site of B cell producing Igs specefically IgM

So asplenic patients will have low IgM which is important for complement activation, thus there be a drop in C3b ( important opsonin ) ----> impaired phagocytosis of encapsulated bacteria which need an opsonin to be phagocytosed

2. Spleen contain phagocytes that will engulf circulating bacteria especially unopsonized. As a result, this will be defective in a spleenic patients.

Net result increased infection by bacteria like Some Killer Have Pretty Nice Capsules

@Shiga...wat do you think abt kap physio videos b/w 2010 or 2007.

0 - ArchivalUser - 12-19-2011

hi for cell physio i like the 2007 with the obese guy i think its the first 5 vids n for the rest use kap 2010 u can skip the first chapter if u have a good grasp on the fluid volume compartments n like filtrations pressure ..muscle dyamnics.. stuff like that

but for kap 2010 cardio...resp..renal...GI n endocrine i found very useful esp when combined with material from FA n UW
