This is a question I've been wondering about too. At one program where I interviewed, teh PD directly said that she can increase or decrease the number of positions for her incomming class.
But at another program I interviewed at, the PD said that it is difficult to increase the number of spots randomly....there's lots of paper work and funding requests.... Sorry I couldn't answer your question...but I'm stummped with the same question too...

my 2cents
a program not only needs funding but must have acgme approval that is the appropriate number of faculty per resident ect ect ect now let say a program has the capacity and acgme authorization for 16 residents these 16 resident can be at any pgy level for instance 4 pgy1, 4 pgy2, 4 pgy3 and 4 pgy4 or 6 pgy1, 4 pgy2, 3 pgy3, and 3 pgy4 as long as they do not go beyond the allowed 16 why is there a change in numbers because residents do not always stay in the programs thereby leaving empty spots example the program has 4 residents per pgy year but looses 2 pgy4 for x number of reasons this will leave 2 empty spots in which programs can fill with any pgy residents they want hope this clarifies your question some

niner is right !
things r not that easy, on my last IV the residents told me the program is doing so well that they may ask acgme for increasing 1 position by 2008 match, then wait for approval. |
