parental consent question - darevee
#1
Patient is a 16 year old female with a son, but she lives with her parents and is financially dependent on them. Patient seeks consult for cosmetic surgery.
Do we need parental consent, or does the fact that she has a child makes her an emancipated minor?

That's what Im confused about. Having children makes her an emancipated minor. Another way is to be financially independent from her parents.
But what if she is still dependent on her parents?

if a person is above 18 and dependant on parents, the person can take his own decisions.. i think young parent also comes into this category.. she can make her own decision.. but still not sure..

GUYS THIS FOLLOWING PARAGRAPGH IS FROM DR. FISCHER'S ETHICS BOOK ITSELF:

Emancipated Minor

A small number of minors, particularly at older ages such as l6 or 17, may bc considered
'emancipated"or freed of the need to have parental consent for any medical care.

The criteria are that the minor is married, self-stupporting and living indepenently, in the military, or the parent of a child that they themselves support.

The criteria for being an emancipated minor relates to being no longer dependent on one's parents for support, In other words, if the minor does not live with his parents, has a job, and is self-supporting financially, only then the minor no longer is dependent upon parental consent for his actions.

darevee,
in your question, pt is still living with the parents and she is also financially dependent on the parents...even though she is a mom herself...so she is not an emancipated minor...per dr. fischer's definition. She will need her parental consent....
