malaria prophylaxis - pindi

56 yr old pt is going to New Delhi for 10 days, seeks malaria prophylaxis. Past med hx significant for afib and bipolar disorder. Pt is on diltiazem and lithium.

what would you advice him for malaria prophylaxis:
1. no prophylaxis as the trip is less than 10 days.
2. chloroquine
3. mefloquine
4. doxicycline
5. pyrimethamine-sulfadoxine

I guess its Doxy as Mefloquine causes neuropsychiatric adverse effects.
So my choice is 4.

Correct answer is ...#4...DOXYCYCLINE...

chloroquine-resistant malaria common in India.
Next best choice is Mefloquine and Doxycycline.
Mefloquine causes neuorpsychiatric disorder / seizure and cardiac conduction abnormallities....
