Cardiac Physiology Question -
#1
lazyboy

Hey everyone! I have a physiology question. I was finishing my studies of cardiac physiology and was reviewing Fick's principle. It says that the rate of consumption of a substance can be figured out by subtracting the rate of exit from the rate of delivery. I further found out that you can calculate the cardiac output of an individual if you take the arterial O2 content minus the venous content, divide that into the rate of oxygen utilization by the body. The arterial oxygen content will be measured directly, and the venous oxygen is in the pulmonary artery catheter. My question is this: how do the USMLE test writers usually give you the rate of oxygen utilization so that you can figure out the cardiac output?? Is it the metabolic rate or what??
