I wouldn't read too much into "good interview signs." It doesn't matter if they say crap like "you'll be a great fit" or "it would be great if you can join our team" or "I hope to see you soon." I doesn't even matter if you get love letter from the program director. Don't try to read between the lines in their words. Love letters from program directors 100% useless in gauging if you're gonna match there.

Hope for the best but don't believe that they are genuinely going to take u until you get matched on or when they hand you the papers to sign for pre-match. Everything else is just words and doesn't mean squat.

Keep in mind, most programs are nice to just about everyone. Even people that interview terribly will get compliments along the way. Not saying u cant hope for the best, just saying don't look for any reassuring signs that you'll get matched there. You'll be ranked however they want and their kind words provide zero reference to gauge how high or low you'll be ranked.

After the interview is over, it is normal in the USA for the applicants and the programs to communicate with each other.

The applicants thank the program for giving them an opportunity to express themselves at the interview. For that purposes, you can send an e-mail to the PC thanking the PD and the faculty for interviewing you. And if you had a memorable encounter with an interviewer, you can always mention that in your e-mail that you wanted to specially thank him/her in particular. Alternatively, you can also write a letter to the PC, however, sending an e-mail is more convenient and less expensive.

The programs thank the applicants for coming and then very often in the e-mails they say something in line of “We hope to see you soon.” “We are sure that you would be a great fit for our program,” or “Everyone here was greatly impressed by your interview performance.” Some even go beyond that and say point blankly “We would rank you very high.”

These words mean nothing in reality.

The reason the programs do that is that they want everyone they interviewed to rank them at the number one position !!!

The match is a two way process. The applicants rank the programs and the programs rank the applicants. That why it is called a “match”- it matches two parties. So for example if a program has ranked an applicant a number one spot, but the applicant hasn’t ranked that program at all or has ranked it lower down the order, that applicant won’t be matched to that program.

So ideally all the programs want all the applicants that they interview to rank them at the number one position, and when that happens, the ball literally goes into the court of the programs, and they can pick and chose. Under these circumstances, the persons whom they would rank high would be matched to their programs. And rest of the applicants, would either be unmatched or would match somewhere else. Nothing happens by you ranking a program higher, the program should also rank you high for a successful match.

A lot of people got in via the right road or networking. Seen it numerous times. I feel like if you know someone well you’d rather work with them then a 99 applicant. There r ways people do this. Match is hard
