Considering current times, no doubt, your score has been compromised but dont lose heart. It dosent end here. You better start working to improve your CV. Get reasearch experience and an attachment in the US. Plan that well. Make your CV shine and i dont see any reason why you shouldnt be better than the candidate next to you.
