important - can i change f-2 visa to j-1 -

hi could someone tell me if the change from f2 status to j1 is possible without leaving us. currently i am on f2 and recently i signed a prematch with a program which offered me a j1. also somebody told me that if i go to india and apply for a j1 from there, in case my j1 is not approved i loose my f2 status also....please tell me if that is true and if i can apply to BCIS for a status change over here.
any inputs will be highly appreciated.

Your program will take the headache for you. Best would be to pass step 3 and go gor H1. Still if no choice then get a J1. You can stay legally here. BUT if you travel outside US you have to get astamp of J1. Watch out the 2 year home residency requirement on J1. You may need a waiver after 3 years to change to other visa status.
