In some African populations, the prevalence of sickle cell disease, an autosomal recessive condition, is 1/100. Based on this value, what proportion of the population would be heterozygous carriers of the sickle cell disease gene?

the prevalence of sickle cell disease, an autosomal recessive condition, is 1/100.
means q^2= 1/100, so q=1/10, P=1-q=9/10
so heterozygous carrier 2pq=2x 1/10x 9/10=18%

2pq= 2 x 1/10 x 9/10 = 18/100

q^2=1/100 q=0.1 p=1 2pq=2x0.1=0.2 or 20%

ishani you are extremelly CORRECT...but for the purpose of this exam in AR disease we approx p=1 so the calculation is easier....the perfect answer is 18%....
