What other contraceptive method should be used to counter STD + pregnancy, apart from condoms? Spermicide/injectable progestins?

I saw spermicide as answer in one question and in another long-acting progestins. Can someone explain the rationale of either?

Do long acting progestins kill or inactivate sperm? I only know of condoms as stopping STD as well as pregnancy.

Perhaps, since condom is more dependent on male discretion, extra protection may be desired.
