resistance of the IV catheter - proteus
#1
An 18-year-old male is brought the emergency department after a motorcycle accident. On arrival, his vital signs are heart rate 130 beats/minute, blood pressure 70/40 mmHg, respiration rate 20/minute, and his oxygen saturation is 90% on 2 Liters of face mask oxygen. He is intubated and two large bore IVs are started. You remember that starting a short, large bore IV is ideal for delivering large amounts of IV fluids very quickly. What would happen to the resistance of the IV catheter if you had used a catheter twice as long with half the diameter?

A. Resistance would increase by a factor of 4
B. Resistance would increase by a factor of 8
C. Resistance would increase by a factor of 16
D. Resistance would increase by a factor of 32
E. Resistance would increase by a factor of 64
