Hypocalcemia treatment first with Mag, why? - longislandmd2b

Why is it needed to treat Hypomagnesemia before we can start IV Calcium Gluconate for hypocalcemia? Also, in a patient with Vit D def induced Hypocalcemia what is the line of treatment? Do we give IV Calcium Gluconate for the acute setting then start on a long term regime of Oral Calcium and Vitamin D after the acute episode is over? IV Calcium Gluconate does not require Vit D to absorb in the gut, since it is IV, thus not needing coadministration of Vit D....right?
