VA = Vt-Vd x breaths/min
Halothane → central medullary depression → ↓ VA
will eventually lead to ↑ paCO2 and ↓ paO2
Severe paO2 ↓ will trigger pheripheral receptors → slight ↑ in VA

Halothane causes respiratory depression, right? That means that for a given increase in PaCO2, there will be less of an increase in alveolar ventilation than normal. Line E shows VA increasing with PaCO2, but to a lesser degree than normal. Line D also shows some degree of respiratory depression, but starts at a higher baseline PaCO2, which there is no reason for. Therefore, I think the answer is E
