Block 4- #30
A 23-year-old woman comes to the physician because of a 6-month history of lethargy and fatigue; she has had a 9-kg (20-lb) weight loss during this period. Physical examination shows a generalized increase in pigmentation of the skin and buccal mucosa. Her blood pressure is 104/70 mm Hg while supine and 86/60 mm Hg while standing. Serum studies show:
Na+ 129 mEq/L
K+ 5.7 mEq/L
Glucose 64 mg/dL
Aldosterone 0.5 ng/dL (N=3–10)
Which of the following changes in renal function is a direct result of the abnormal serum aldosterone concentration in this patient?
A-Decreased glomerular filtration rate
B- Increased renin secretion
C-Increased sodium in the urine
D-Increased water resorption from the distal tubules
E-Proteinuria
------------------------
Why not B? Doesn't Renin directly increase too as there's low BP?
Ans is C. I was stuck between B and C.
When I'm down to 2 choices, I most of the time end up picking the wrong one and other one is always the correct one.. (
