also, try local community college if it has allied health/nursing degrees. IMGs are hired to teach A&P. I went to the fair and they hired me right away, per course pay is good too. I ended up getting another job though.

please look up Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist positions. Hospitals are looking for FMGs with clinical knowledge to replace coders who were previously doing this job. They have training given by ACDIS http://www.hcpro.com/acdis/ link is there. Training is kinda expensive around 1500 for a 4 day training. I believe there is online courses too. Companies will most likely pay for your training if they hire you.

Dont worry Appania. Your priority is providing for your new family . While it is desirable that we should find something medically relevant to remain active in field and stay competitive, your priorities slightly change this year. For what it is worth, there is dignity in every job out there and if they ask you this at your interview, you should proudly say how hard you worked at a job to provide for your new family. Any respectful program and PD will be able to relate to hard work. Everything depends on how you view it and present it.

Great to hear of all the mature replies and ideas being said!

@pathapcp, that postdoctoral fellow avenue sounds appealing but quite a lengthy 3-5+ year dedication. If you're young and have no desire to get into a medical residency training program, that might be an option but far from a realistic path for many.

@pillrollingtremor - those CDIS jobs are a hit or miss from what I've heard. Plus there's the added factor of putting your own out of pocket expenses but at least, it's through a legitimate organization and not some run of the mill shop meant to exploit or mislead foreign grads.

Re CDIS to anyone that knows more : What are the possibilities of transitioning toward a residency program if you're even hired? How do residency programs view someone who took a CDIS position? What kind of salary are we talking about?

Keep it going with suggestions and discussions - it'll benefit others in the process.

My suggestion: Please go to the websites of various hospitals look up names of researchers (primary investigators), send them your CV and tell them you are looking for a paid research associate position because you are interested in the molecular mechanism of XYZ disease.
Also send your resume to all research assistant, research associate positions posted on all university hospital websites. In NY full time research associate makes between 48-58K.
This is the catch::: They will expect (most of them) two year commitment (ofcourse you can leave earlier) but forget getting LORs!

All the best.

Do you have Step 3 done? If not, get that out of the way. What to do on your off year: Postdoctoral Fellow is an excellent idea. What state are you in? Look on your responding state medical board website their policy on a 'House Physician'. Few states, Florida being one, allow IMG graduates to practice with a restricted house license under a board certified physician. This will serve as excellent USCE and programs will view you as already partially trained.
