people do match

1) how many programs did you apply to?
2) make contacts, contact old classmates, ppl from your country, etc etc
3) work on your PS
4) apply to every program you can afford to apply to
5) switching to psych is probably to late unless you can schedule a few clinical experiences before september and get the LoRs in
6) have someone review your application before you submit
7) if you have any doubts about your LoRs, get new ones

@infernal: perseverance is the name of the game. If you are set on IM. I would just pick one local program and stick to it and do research, go to their grand rounds and have more interaction with them.

If you are not set on IM, then applying to FM will improve your options of matching. Main advantage of IM over FM is you get lot of inpatient and ICU experience and you will able to specialize if you are interested. If your goal is primary care any field is the same. People tend to chose IM because as it more inpatient oriented, they are comfortable dealing with any high risk cases(which most of the times - subspecialists are available but at time it helps).

you can match in SOAP if you are an IMG and through CONTACTS. I am proof of that.

@iluvmedicine, congratulations on your match! Care to share you SOAP experience? Typically SOAP is not very kind on IMGs. I would love to hear about how SOAP went for you and what someone else could do if they have to match in SOAP. Would love to hear from you at letmeinwill AT gmail.com

You should try something less competitive than internal medicine.

@letmeinwillyou

I had a contact who recommended me to PD in SOAP. I made sure to login and submit my application to the hospital in question first day of SOAP...i.e. they have very tight deadlines and you have to deal with the system crashing also......very frustrating day that will give you a headache but i got through it and submitted applications by deadline. Applied to both prelim and categorical in SOAP.

then had two 15 minute interviews with Chief resident and PD, which I didn't think went very well. Received an offer next day in 3rd round for Prelim and accepted. Program itself was IMG-friendly.

Didn't hear anything at all from other 49 programs i applied to in SOAP so the CONTACT was what made the difference.
