preliminary year - 1 year of internship that is necessary before joining an advanced position i.e anes, radio, derm, neuro etc.

transitional year - 1 year of internship for people who have not decided on any specialty. Very competitive, mostly filled by AMG's

so we imgs can apply for both but more difficult to get transitional
in effect both are same after transitional we can go to anes right
