Dyslipidemia is common among diabetic patients, and current recommendations are to screen aggressively for and treat abnormalities that are identified.

The most common forms of dyslipidemia in diabetic patients are hypertriglyceridemia and reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels.

Elevated levels of LDL cholesterol are not more common among diabetic patients;
however, they are more atherogenic and are noted to be smaller and denser.

LDL particles are more easily glycated and are more susceptible to oxidation in diabetic patients. This finding has led to the recommendation of many organizations, including the American Heart Association and the National Cholesterol Education Program, that patients with diabetes mellitus, regardless of their history of cardiovascular disease, have a goal LDL of less than 100 mg/dL.

The American Heart Association also recommends the following targets: HDL >45 mg/dL in men and >55 mg/dL in women and triglycerides
