If I am in your place with interest in Psychiatry, I would definately join the team.

Reasons:

1. It will show that I have genuine interest in psych
2. I am active academically in the mean time rather than sitting at home or doing random paying job.
3. I might get lucky to have my name in publication/abstract/oral-poster presentation which in turn would boost my application/cv.
4. The PhD I would work with might know some people in Psych department and I might be lucky to get the position through his/her contacts.
5. I will be PAID... hey, MONEY MONEY MONEY.....
