is it a routine to give a test dose to a patient before administering iv ampicillin or any penicillin injection for the first time?

Well, have never heard of and if it were a regular practice then it should have been very common to be known by many people. An allergic reaction is a rare happening and not the order of the day for this to become a universal procedure. My personal judgement with no references.

If I recall correctly a Penicillin reaction is a hypersensitivity reaction that needs a sensitization first. Why would you sensitize a pt. with the first shot so that the next one will cause the actual reaction? Please correct me if I am wrong in this thought process.
