If i wanna match with a decent IM program (average, not crappy or super schools) how important are electives?
especially looking at a brown elective, but they dont give LORs after- is it a waste of around 5k usd?
dont think i can afford more than one 4 week at that cost
advice anyone?
creds 97/97/pass us citizen, fmg from KMC manipal no other experience/pubs/papers else-

you need 2-3 months observershisp in differnt states for your CV to be strong enough to compete. Don't go for expensive electives, you can find many affordable places. All your observerships together shouldn't cost more than 6k.

manadr, from personal experience, if you have LORs from the top places, it really helps.
Experience counts , but the Program Directors want to read what these places thought about you.
Get in the maximum no. of electives that you can. Do it before you graduate.
There is plenty of electives/Visiting student electives available. Try to do it at a hospital where you can get into later.
Or you can do a combination of the Ivy leagues and a few at other places. I did 3 at Harvard and Cornell. And followed it with a 3 month observership after graduation.
It has really helped me.
