Having Trouble with Biostat Question - lyre
#1
Which of the following is the median number of episodes of uti for children (n = 100) in the sample.
0 uti = 25 children
1 uti = 30 children
2 uti = 10 children
3 uti = 35 children

Find mean, median and mode of the number of episodes of uti in these children.

Please Help

Mean = (0 x 25) + (1 x 30) + (2 x 10) + (3 x 35) / 25+30+10+35

Not sure about median... I have na idea but I dont wanna give out shitty info

Mode = 3 utis (most common occuring data point)

Didn't you make a video on this? I remember watching it....

Mean = [(25*0) + (30 *1) + (10 *2) + (35*3)]/ 100 (sample size) = 1.55 UTI's

Median = Look for the (n+1)/2 th value which is the 50.5th value so take average of 50th and 51st value, when you arrange in the ascending order.. You'll notice that the 50th and 51st value is 1 and so (1+1)/2 = 1 UTI . Faster way is to see there are 25 zeroes, 30 ones, 10 twos and 35 threes. You'll then notice that just the zeroes and ones will come to 55 numbers, with 50th and 51st value being 1.

Mode = look for the UTI number with the highest frequency. You'll notice that there are 35 children (highest in the sample) with 3 UTI's so the mode will be 3 UTI's.

but the question said number number of episodes of uti...and 50 is the number of people....
so that cant be the middle point of the number of episodes....

as for mean would you pick 1 as the answer or 2....because 1.5 is the mathematical answer

Mean = 1 ............ (1+1 / 2)

Mode = 3

Mean = 1.55 ..........((0 x 25) + (1 x 30) + (2 x 10) + (3 x 35) / 100 )

@ lyre

I don't remember making any comment on the video lol

how did you get 1.5? (1+1)/2 is 1.

for median you are trying to take the center value which in this case is the average of 50th and 51st value when you arrange in ascending order.

eg. 1, 1, 2, 3, 3 ( in this case 2 is the median the center value)..
eg. 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3 ( there are 6 numbers here so (6+1)/2 = 3.5 so you take the 3rd and 4th value and take average of it , which is (2+2)/2 = 2

it's rather

Median* = 1 ............ (1+1 / 2)

Mode = 3

Mean = 1.55 ..........((0 x 25) + (1 x 30) + (2 x 10) + (3 x 35) / 100 )
