a 73 yr old female comes to physician bcuz of severe pain and swelling her rt. knee joints. Her past medical H/O HTN and Dm , well controlled by medications. Her rt. knee was replaced three yrs ago. On exam. her temp. is 101 F, rt. knee joint tender and reddish. Which of the following is most likely cause of her present symptoms?

Ok,all replacement hx looks like just for distraction, so you choose staph. epidermitis. I thinks we need to concentrate on Diabetis hx and diabetics are well known for MRSA,

D because of DM and and Most common cause of osteomyelitis is staph anyway

septic arthritis in prosthetics most commom cause staph. epedermidis

@tazul....STAPH EPI is one of the many bugs that are associated with the format of question stem .... but ur question stem most states DM... + infection = osteomylitis .... your method of question was a bit off which threw most of us off.... but thank you so much Smile

staph epi is one of them but not the MOST COMMON*.

@zen, thx, i think qx stem not suggest osteomyelitis, its single prosthetic joint involvement- septic arthritis. Htn & dm is well controlled. most common cause is coagulase negative staphylococci (staph. epidermidis)
