A 28-year-old man is placed on haloperidol after he is diagnosed with schizophrenia. A few days
later his concerned mother brings him back to the psychiatrist because he is exhibiting strange
movements. The physician observes movements that consist of sustained contractions and
twisting motions of his limbs and trunk, with his eyes tonically deviated upward for several
minutes. Which of the following adverse reactions is occurring in this patient?

It is Tardive dyskinesia but better answer is Tardive dystonia because there are twisting motions. Not sure.

Hi medicus. My main point here is that TD usually needs months to years on antipsychotic treatment before it develops.
Patients on high-potency First-generation antipsychotics should regularly be assessed for TD as an attempt to prevent it. Smile

Hi Pshychmledr,
Didnt see " a few days later". In that case donno how dystonia will be a correct answer. Or
I guess I was wrong thinking that dystonia is a part of Tardive dyskinesia. Had I noticed " a few days later" I would have selected Akathisia.
Thanks for asking this Q.

Its dystonia because here we have sustained contraction and twisting.
