Obligate aerobe
Facultative intracellular
Non motile
Catalase +ve

Phenolase +ve (used for diagnosis)
Grow at low temperatures
Can not be cluttered in vitro (only in vivo only armadillos or mouse foot )

Leprosy ✈✈✈✈✈spectrum of ds

1/lepromatous leprosy
Weak immune response
Organism found everywhere
Multiple skin lumps and pumps, leonine face, peripheral neuropathy

2/intermediate form

BL , BB , BT

3/Tuberculoid leprosy
Intact cell mediated immunity with intense response
Granuloma formation limit spread
Localized damage ✈✈✈✈✈Thickened nerves and hypopigmented skin, peripheral neuropathy

Dx✈✈✈

skin/ nerve biopsy (granuloma in tuberculoid, acid fast bacteria in lepromatous)
Lepromin skin test to determine prognosis(+ve in tubercuoloid )

Treatment ✈✈✈✈

Used in combination to prevent resistance (Dapsone, Rifampin, clofazimine)

Reply
leprosy medication cause reaction to the dead bacteria Do NOT stop treatment

Type 1 reaction✈✈✈✈✈
Intensified tuberculoid reaction
ttt by prednisone

Type2 reaction ✈✈✈✈✈
