hey..when shud u take step 3 aftr step 2 cs?? do v get to start our residency before appearin tht? n if yes can we take 3rd step durin the first year of our residency program?

Divya- You can chose when to take Step 3. Some programs require Step 3 results before starting, for H1B purposes. Other require it by the 2nd or 3rd year (with some may even lax upto 4th year; a neuroSx friend of mine gave his Step 3 in his 7th year!). I would suggest taking it as close as possible to your USMLE Step 2. But yes, if you are taking it before you are applying, then definitely a "pass" score is gonna look much better than a "fail".
